Girls Inc. Marks Together Day, 5K

WAYNE COUNTY, Ind. – Girls Inc. is moving closer to beginning repairs on its building after recent damage, according to Executive Director Melissa Soper.

Soper said the organization hopes to return to the building within the next few months, while summer camp programs will continue operating in the meantime.

To help offset repair costs and support ongoing programs, Girls Inc. is accepting donations. This week marks Girls Inc. Week, with Thursday recognized as Girls Inc. Together Day. This year’s theme, “Nourish Her Future,” highlights food insecurity issues affecting families across the country.

Soper said donations collected during events like Together Day help fund the organization’s daily operations and programs.

“Days like these go into our general fund, so we can use it for everything operating” Soper said. “Anywhere from paying the light bill to putting girls through summer camp and we could really use those scholarship funds right now.”

Girls Inc. is also encouraging businesses and community organizations to contribute scholarship funding for its annual summer camp. The program gives girls a safe place to spend their summer while providing meals, field trips, and educational activities.

The organization is also preparing for its 28th annual 5K Run, scheduled for May 16 at Middlefork Reservoir. Registration begins at 7 a.m.

“I’ve had to many signups this year, I am so excited to see how many turn out,” Soper said about participants and volunteers.

The annual 5K is the first run of the Wayne County Challenge series.

“They’re just all so special, we’re so excited,” Soper said about the girls involved with the organization. “It really is all about being strong, smart, and bold.”
