CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind. — Shelters have opened in Cambridge City Wednesday as flooding continues to impact the community and residents are being evacuated from affected areas.

Western Wayne Elementary School is open as a community shelter for residents who have been displaced by flooding or need a safe place to go, according to Western Wayne Community Schools.

The Cambridge City Fire Department and Golay Community Center are also receiving residents who have evacuated, according to the Wayne County Emergency Management Agency.

Wayne County EMA reported between 7.3 and 10 inches of rain in portions of western Wayne County during the past 24 hours, resulting in significant flooding along Creitz Creek and Symonds Creek.

Water rescues and evacuations are underway in Cambridge City and surrounding areas. The Richmond Fire Department Water Rescue Team and Indiana Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division are assisting with rescue operations.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Department has contacted the American Red Cross to provide additional assistance to residents affected by the flooding, according to Western Wayne Community Schools.

Western Wayne Community Schools is encouraging residents to remain safe, stay informed and follow directions from local emergency services.

“If you are asked to evacuate, please do not delay,” the school district said. “Your safety and the safety of your family should be the priority.”

Residents should avoid flooded roadways and never drive around barricades. Anyone experiencing an emergency should call 911.
