A Quarter Century of Dreams: Cheryl DeLucio's 25-Year Journey at Dance Techniques

What does it take to keep a dream alive for 25 years? For Cheryl DeLucio, founder of Dance Techniques with Cheryl DeLucio (DTCD) in downtown Richmond, Indiana, the answer is simple: belief, community, and an unwillingness to let setbacks have the final word.

As National Women's Small Business Month shines a spotlight on female entrepreneurs across the country, DeLucio's story stands out as a testament to what sustained vision and community investment can build. This year marks a quarter century since she opened the doors of her studio — a milestone that reflects not just longevity, but a lasting impact on generations of dancers and families throughout Richmond.

A Vision Rooted in Belonging

DeLucio founded Dance Techniques in 2002, bringing with her a foundation built at Stephens College, where she studied performing arts and developed the technical and artistic grounding that would shape her teaching philosophy. From the outset, her goal was never simply to teach steps — it was to create a space where dancers of all ages and abilities could find belonging.

That vision quickly expanded into a full curriculum spanning Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop, Tap, and Acrobatics, serving dancers from age three through adulthood. DeLucio's commitment to staying current in her craft is reflected in her active membership with the Dance Educators of America, an affiliation that has kept her training and curriculum aligned with national standards even as dance trends evolve.

An Anchor in Downtown Richmond

For 25 years, DTCD has remained a constant presence in downtown Richmond — through changing storefronts, shifting economic conditions, and an evolving local business landscape. That continuity is rare, and it has made the studio more than a business; it's a community fixture.

DeLucio's investment in Richmond extends well beyond her studio walls. She has volunteered thousands of hours to community theater throughout her career, choreographing productions, serving on boards, and performing on local stages. That civic engagement has woven DTCD into the broader cultural fabric of the city, reinforcing DeLucio's belief that a small business thrives not in isolation, but as part of a larger community ecosystem.

Resilience in the Face of Crisis

No milestone of this scale comes without hardship, and DeLucio is candid about the greatest challenge of her career: the COVID-19 pandemic. With studios shuttered and families uncertain, DTCD faced an existential threat that tested everything DeLucio had built.

Rather than close, she pivoted — repeatedly. Adjusting formats, adapting class structures, and finding new ways to keep dancers engaged and families connected, DeLucio steered the studio through a crisis that closed countless small businesses nationwide. That resilience didn't just preserve DTCD; it reinforced the trust her community had placed in her leadership for nearly two decades prior.

Leading with Encouragement, Humor, and High Standards

Ask anyone who has trained under DeLucio, and a consistent picture emerges: a leader who balances high expectations with genuine warmth. Her classroom philosophy blends technical rigor with encouragement and humor, creating an environment where students feel both challenged and supported.

That approach has shaped not just dancers, but confident, disciplined individuals equipped with lessons that extend far beyond the studio floor — perseverance, self-expression, and the value of showing up fully for one's craft.

A Legacy That Spans Generations

Perhaps the clearest evidence of DeLucio's impact is the number of former students who have returned to DTCD — not as dancers, but as parents enrolling their own children, and in some cases, as teachers themselves. This generational return speaks volumes about the trust and affection DeLucio has cultivated over 25 years.

It's a rare kind of legacy: one measured not in revenue or recognition, but in the enduring relationships a small business can build within its community. For DeLucio, watching former students pass their love of dance to their own children is perhaps the truest validation of her life's work.

Looking Ahead, Dreaming Forward

DTCD's 25th anniversary celebration will culminate in a recital titled "Winter Spell," scheduled for June 2027 — a performance that promises to honor both the studio's history and its future.

As DeLucio reflects on a quarter century of teaching, mentoring, and community-building, she returns to the philosophy that has guided her since day one, a quote from Walt Disney: "If you can dream it, you can do it."

For Cheryl DeLucio, that dream has become a thriving studio, a devoted community, and a legacy spanning generations — proof that small businesses, led with heart and persistence, can leave an outsized mark. As this National Women's Small Business Month celebrates entrepreneurs like her, DeLucio's journey offers a clear message: dreams built on community endure.
