Fifty Years on Two Wheels: Louise Shade's Enduring Legacy at Shade Cycles

Walk into Shade Cycles on Chester Boulevard, and you'll feel it before anyone says a word: a quiet confidence, a sense that this place has earned its name. Behind that confidence sits Louise Shade, a woman who has spent half a century building one of Richmond, Indiana's most recognizable businesses—first beside her husband, and for the last decade, on her own.

Her story isn't one of overnight success or splashy reinvention. It's something rarer: five decades of steady, deliberate work, met head-on with resilience when life demanded it most.

A Partnership That Became a Legacy

Shade Cycles began on March 29, 1976, when Louise and her late husband, George Shade, opened Harley-Davidson Center Inc. on North 10th Street. Louise handled the secretarial side of the business in those early years, while George led the dealership floor. It was a true partnership, built in the garage-door-and-paperwork era before computers touched the industry.

In March 1997, the business relocated to its current home at 2240 Chester Boulevard, eventually transitioning to the fully independent Shade Cycles it is today. Along the way, the Shades became fixtures of the regional motorcycle community—riding together to all 48 contiguous states, attending races, dealer meetings, and riding events across the country. "Riding with fellow riders and enjoying this country was priceless," Louise reflects.

That partnership, personal and professional, defined the first four decades of the business.

Stepping Into Leadership

Everything changed in 2015, when George passed away. For many business owners, that kind of loss might have signaled an ending. For Louise, it marked a beginning of a different kind.

"After his passing in 2015, I have come to the forefront of the business as the leader and whatever else it takes to keep it going," she says.

It's a matter-of-fact statement, but behind it lies real grit. Louise had never worked in retail before stepping into that spotlight. Learning to help customers find parts, navigate inventory, and close sales was new territory—skills she built in real time, while also absorbing the weight of running the business she and George had built together.

She didn't do it alone. Her son, Greg Shade, now serves as service manager, carrying the family's hands-on expertise into the next generation. Together, they've kept Shade Cycles true to its roots while adapting to a changing industry.

A Philosophy Built on Service

Ask Louise what drives the business, and her answer is simple: the customer experience comes first.

"The ownership of a motorcycle is strictly a personal choice of the consumer," she explains, "but it is our responsibility to make their experience with the motorcycle the best it can possibly be."

That philosophy shows up in the friendly, no-pressure atmosphere customers encounter at Shade Cycles—a place where riders are greeted and respected, not just processed through a transaction. It's a value Louise has carried since the beginning, and one she's worked to instill in every employee who walks through the door.

Her leadership approach reflects that same clarity. "Knowing what each job involves helps with bringing in new employees who know what the expectations are of the position they're filling," she says. New hires aren't left guessing. At the same time, Louise keeps the door open to new ideas, welcoming fresh approaches from her team rather than insisting on doing things the way they've always been done.

It's a balance of structure and flexibility—exactly what's required to keep a decades-old business feeling current.

Navigating Change, One System at a Time

Longevity in business rarely comes without growing pains. For Shade Cycles, one of the biggest came early: the shift from handwritten paperwork to computerized systems.

"With the addition of a computer system, a lot of changes were required, and getting familiar with the processes was sometimes overwhelming," Louise admits. "But in the long run, the new processes saved considerable time and allowed other processes to be added."

It's a small story with a big lesson—one that mirrors the broader arc of her career. Change is rarely comfortable in the moment, but Louise has consistently chosen to adapt rather than resist, trusting that the long-term payoff is worth the short-term disruption.

Beyond the Dealership

Louise's influence extends well past the showroom floor. She also manages Shade Properties, LLC, overseeing another layer of the business she and George built together. And within the broader motorcycle community, she serves as President of the Whitewater Valley Richmond, Indiana Chapter of the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.)—a role that keeps her connected to the riders who have shaped her life's work.

It's fitting: a woman who has spent 50 years in the retail motorcycle business remains just as invested in the riding community itself, not merely the commerce around it.

No Grand Expansion—Just Steady Commitment

Unlike many business leaders eager to chart ambitious growth plans, Louise is refreshingly direct about her goals for the future: there aren't any sweeping ones.

"There are no new plans at this time," she says. "To be able to serve the motorcycle riders with parts and services to keep them close to home is what we hope to be able to do for the foreseeable future."

In an era that often equates success with scale, Louise's focus on consistency and local service stands out. Her ambition isn't measured in new locations or market share—it's measured in the riders who keep coming back, year after year, for the same dependable service Shade Cycles has offered since 1976.

The Life in Her Years

When asked for a guiding quote, Louise turns to Abraham Lincoln: "In the end, it's not the years in your life that count but the life in your years."

Few phrases capture her story more fittingly. Fifty years in the motorcycle business. Decades of marriage and partnership with George. A decade of solo leadership following his passing. Countless miles ridden across all 48 contiguous states. A community role that extends beyond the dealership into property management and regional rider advocacy.

Louise Shade's career isn't defined by any single milestone—it's defined by the accumulation of all of them, held together by resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to the people who walk through her door.

For East Central Indiana's riding community, Shade Cycles remains more than a dealership. It's a testament to what one woman, backed by family and fifty years of hard-won experience, can build and sustain—mile after mile, customer after customer.
