She Built This: How "The Camera Lady" Built a Business on Heart in Cambridge City
Alisha Lilley didn't set out to become Wayne County's most beloved photographer. She set out to solve a problem she'd lived herself.
"As a single mom who worked 2 to 3 jobs most of my life, I could never afford the big hour-long, hundreds-of-dollars photo shoots — but I wanted more than a cheap single-pose package from the convenience store, too," Alisha recalls. That gap — too expensive on one end, too impersonal on the other — became the blueprint for Lilley Photography LLC, the business she launched in 2022 out of a conviction that families like hers deserved better.
An Origin Story Built on Necessity
Alisha didn't come to photography through a traditional studio apprenticeship or a business degree. She came to it through hard years of hustle, the kind that teaches you exactly what's missing in a market before you ever pick up a camera professionally. "Quality portraits at prices working moms and dads can actually afford, in a reasonable timeframe" — that was the mission, plain and simple.
Today, locals around Cambridge City know her simply as "the camera lady," a nickname that captures just how woven into the community she's become. Operating as a solo practitioner out of her studio at 221 W Main St, Suite B, Alisha personally handles every part of the client journey — from the first phone call to the final delivered gallery — across Wayne, Henry, Hancock, Fayette, and Randolph counties.
Creative Style and Services: Authenticity Over Posed Perfection
Walk through Alisha's portfolio and one thing becomes immediately clear: she's not chasing stiff, cookie-cutter poses. Her work leans into candid, authentic human connection, whether she's photographing a senior's milestone session or a toddler mid-giggle.
Her offerings have grown to reflect the full texture of community life:
-
Milestone & Portrait Sessions for seniors, families, couples, and infants
-
Action Sports & Local Events, capturing the energy of community games and regional gatherings
-
Themed Mini-Sessions that have become local favorites — think Spooky Pets After Dark, Little Ghouls, and Haunted Portraits
-
Corporate Branding Photography, helping small businesses build the visual presence they need to grow
It's a business model that refuses to choose between accessibility and quality — and that refusal has become her signature.
Community Impact: Giving Back When It Mattered Most
Ask Alisha about her proudest business milestone, and she won't point to her brick-and-mortar studio, impressive as that leap was. She points to something smaller, and far more human.
"The proudest moments are the small ones. When kids come up to me after a game asking, 'When are our pictures gonna get uploaded?' — that's not annoying, it's heartwarming."
That same heart is what drove her to offer free water-damage photo restoration for community members whose family photographs were destroyed in local flooding — a painstaking, time-intensive process she undertook simply because the memories mattered. When the town's Christmas decorations were lost in the same flood, Alisha gave again, moved by the childhood memories those lights represented for her own family.
"I'm a small-town business and a small family, and I give whenever I can," she says. "I just wish I could do more — I always wish I could do more."
Leadership Philosophy: "Get It Done"
When asked to describe her leadership style, Alisha doesn't reach for a corporate buzzword. She offers three words instead: "Get it done."
Running a one-woman operation means there's no backup to call when life interrupts — a sick child, a family emergency, a week that demands she choose between business and home. "Some days you have to choose: family or business. Sometimes it's the whole week," she admits. "It's frustrating — it can feel like you're sinking. But you get up the next day and go at it and get it done."
That resilience is anchored by faith and a strong personal support network — the people who show up to babysit, run errands, or simply let her vent when the week has been long. It's also grounded in a quote she returns to often: John 11:35 — "Jesus wept."
"It's only two words, but it reminds me that even the Son of God showed emotion. I spend so much time trying to be strong and have it all together for everyone, and this verse gives me permission to feel what I feel."
Looking Ahead
Alisha's future plans carry the same blend of ambition and heart that built her business in the first place. She hopes to grow Lilley Photography further, but she's also exploring ways to expand her photo restoration work — the salvage projects that let her hand people back pieces of their past.
"Isn't the old saying, the sky's the limit?" she says. "I know wherever I go or whatever I do, it's always going to be exciting and fun — I'm following my heart, so I love doing it."
It's that heart — practical, resilient, and deeply rooted in Cambridge City — that has turned a single mom's side hustle into a cornerstone of the community's story.
