She Built This: Spotlight Interviews

Amanda Walters - AbraCutDabra

From Panic to Passion: How Amanda Walters Built AbraCutDabra One Loyal Client at a Time

Some entrepreneurs meticulously plan their businesses for years, leaving no detail unchecked before making the leap. Amanda Walters did not have that luxury. After losing her job, she accepted a friend’s favor, allowing her to step into the world of dog grooming. Nearly a decade later, she owns AbraCutDabra, a thriving grooming business in Richmond, Indiana, built on integrity, hard work, and a steadfast belief in her own worth. Amanda's story is not the polished, pre-planned narrative we often expect from successful entrepreneurs; it is messier, more human, and arguably more inspiring because of it.

An Unplanned Beginning

"I didn't set out with a plan to become a groomer or start a business," Amanda admits. Her journey began under unexpected circumstances: a mentor needed a bather, and Amanda stepped in, albeit hesitantly. Grooming seemed daunting, requiring significant investment in training, and, initially, it didn’t sound like fun at all. However, her perspective shifted, and she discovered a passion for grooming that she hadn’t realized was within her.

Over time, Amanda found joy in the independence of building something of her own. When she finally decided to branch out, she was terrified but leaned on her training, trusting that her skills would carry her forward. "I found my love for grooming along the way," she recalls, emphasizing that passion emerged from persistence, curiosity, and a commitment to keep showing up despite the uncertainty.

Building a Business That Reflects Her Values

Today, with nearly ten years of grooming experience and four and a half years at the helm of AbraCutDabra, Amanda understands the importance of balancing work and family as a mother of three. Owning her business has provided her with the independence and flexibility to create a work-life balance that suits her and her family.

"I believe in honesty, hard work, and the personal feel of a small hometown," she explains. Amanda wants AbraCutDabra to be a place where clients not only feel comfortable but also confident in their choice. Operating by appointment only allows her to focus on individualized care—ensuring every dog receives the attention and expertise they deserve.

Clients frequently highlight Amanda's exceptional rapport with animals and her keen ability to style pets according to owner preferences. For her, this level of attentiveness is more than just customer service; it is a reflection of her business philosophy. "I want AbraCutDabra to be more than just a place where someone drops off a dog for a service," she asserts.

Leadership Rooted in Patience and Honesty

As AbraCutDabra flourished, Amanda's role as a mentor expanded. She has guided two individuals through their own grooming journeys, fostering their confidence and skills. "My leadership style is patient, understanding, hands-on, and honest," she states. Whether her mentees choose to branch out independently or continue working alongside her, Amanda feels proud, drawing from the tough, old-school lessons she learned during her training while allowing others to cultivate their own unique voices and techniques.

This blend of high standards and genuine care has become a hallmark of Amanda’s approach as both a groomer and a leader.

Facing Fear and Choosing to Bet on Herself

When asking Amanda about her greatest challenge, she instantly identifies it: learning to step into her own light and choosing to believe in herself. "Starting a business felt like a huge gamble," she confides, "but I had to recognize my value and keep moving forward."

That belief didn’t blanket the hard aspects of entrepreneurship. Amanda learned to assert boundaries, communicate clearly with clients, and build refined systems for organization. "I treat each day as an opportunity to learn, adjust, and persevere through challenges," she says. "I didn't need everything figured out; I just needed to remain persistent and open to learning from each experience."

Her advice to her younger self echoes this wisdom: "Trust your gut. It's never really steered me wrong. I'd tell myself to appreciate my skills sooner and not wait until I felt entirely ready." She adds, "You have one life, so make sure you live it. Staying true to who you are will take you further than trying to please everyone."

Amanda's personal mantra encapsulates her journey: "Know your worth. Stay true to yourself. Find people who appreciate your shine, and never let anyone dim your sparkle."

Community, Connection, and What Comes Next

Much of Amanda's success can be attributed to the supportive community around her, including a strong network of local women business owners and fellow groomers who refer clients to her. "When people back you as a person and a business owner, it propels your growth," she reflects.

Looking ahead, Amanda does not chase rapid expansion. "I want AbraCutDabra to remain personal and never feel rushed," she explains. "This is not just about money or volume; I aim to build something sustainable that can endure, not just a quick flame." Her focus is on continuing her personal education, growing her business, and fostering opportunities for those she believes in.

This vision is grounded in the same values that have guided her journey: patience, honesty, and a commitment to serving her clients and community—one dog, one appointment, one loyal relationship at a time.
