Emily Hoel - Hoel Roofing

Building From the Ground Up: Emily Hoel's Roofing Legacy in Central Indiana

What does it take to build a company people trust with the roof over their heads? For Emily Hoel, co-owner of Hoel Roofing & Remodeling, the answer has never been complicated: show up, tell the truth, and treat every homeowner like a neighbor.

Since 2017, Emily and her husband, Bob, have grown Hoel Roofing & Remodeling from a shared frustration into a thriving, debt-free contracting business serving six counties across Central Indiana. Theirs is a story less about roofing materials and more about redefining what client care should look like in an industry that too often treats homeowners as transactions rather than people.

A Gap Worth Filling

Before launching their own company, Emily and Bob spent years working for a larger roofing corporation—one built for volume rather than relationships. That experience revealed a clear gap: homeowners weren't being heard, educated, or respected throughout the process.

"Wanting to determine our own success, not relying on a company to care about our family's future," is how Emily describes the spark behind Hoel Roofing & Remodeling. "We strive to do a great job and leave customers happy. Having integrity and doing what we say we will do." That commitment has produced a company operating fully licensed and, notably, debt-free—a rarity in the contracting world and a direct reflection of the no-shortcuts approach Emily brings to both business and life.

What They Deliver

Headquartered in Rushville, Indiana, Hoel Roofing & Remodeling serves homeowners across Wayne, Rush, Shelby, Henry, Decatur, Fayette, Union, and Bartholomew counties with a full-spectrum approach to home exteriors: residential roofing repair and replacement, seamless gutter installation, siding installation and repair, and storm damage insurance claim support.

That last offering is where Emily's commitment to homeowner education shines brightest. Insurance claims can overwhelm even the most prepared homeowner after a storm. By walking clients through the process step by step, Hoel Roofing & Remodeling turns a stressful situation into a manageable one—proof that good contracting is as much about guidance as craftsmanship.

A Leadership Style Built on Honesty—and Heart

Ask Emily how she leads, and she skips the corporate language entirely. "Straight forward, to the point, but caring and nurturing—like a mom or sister would be," she says. That means checking in with her team, noticing when someone is struggling, and offering advice in a loving way. When a rare conflict arises, they work through it directly. "We love each other," she says simply.

That style wasn't built without struggle. Emily is candid about a challenge many women leaders in male-dominated industries will recognize: self-doubt. "I always doubted myself as a leader. I don't want to not know the answers," she admits. "However, being confident sometimes means being able to say 'I don't know' and figuring it out." Confidence, in Emily's telling, isn't about having every answer—it's about being willing to find one.

When asked about her proudest milestone, she doesn't mention revenue or expansion. "Seeing how much our team has grown individually—their lives changing and growing," she says. "Pouring into our team and helping guide them to be successful." For Emily, leadership is measured in people, not just projects. And if she could advise her 2017 self? "Hire help sooner."

Roots in the Community

Emily was born in Wayne County and raised in Centerville, Indiana—proudly a Centerville Bulldog. That small-town upbringing shapes how she runs her business and shows up for her community. "I love my town, community, and state," she says.

That love shows in action. Hoel Roofing & Remodeling supports FFA, 4-H, and local community events, reinforcing the agricultural spirit that defines rural Indiana life. Emily also personally sponsors the Foundations of Personal Finance curriculum in area high schools—a natural extension of how she and Bob run their own business: debt-free, disciplined, and financially transparent. "That's what makes small towns great," she says.

Entrepreneur, Mother, Mentor

Behind the business is a mother of three—Rylee, Rhett, and Reagan—who also manages three dogs and, yes, a herd of cows. Balancing entrepreneurship with family life isn't a footnote to Emily's story; it's central to it.

She speaks openly about the value of community among women who understand that balance. "Most moms understand 'mom guilt,'" she says. "Having like-minded people you can share your fears and doubts with is important." She also credits mentorship—especially from those with more life experience—as essential to her growth.

Never on the Back Burner

Emily's favorite quote says it all: "You miss 100% of the shots you never take." It's the philosophy that pushed her to leave corporate roofing and build something of her own—and the message she passes on to her team and community daily. "Never set a dream on the back burner," she urges. "Better to try and fail than not to try at all."

With a new office space on the horizon, Hoel Roofing & Remodeling's next chapter is already taking shape—built, as always, without shortcuts, and without debt.
