Amber Mills - Leaning Lily

From Florist to Founder: How Amber Mills Built Leaning Lily Into a Community Pillar

What happens when a woman with a decade of floristry experience decides she's ready to stop arranging someone else's vision and start building her own? In Richmond, Indiana, the answer bloomed into Leaning Lily—a flower shop that's grown into something far bigger than its name suggests.

As National Women's Small Business Month shines a spotlight on the makers and leaders who power local economies, Amber Mills' story offers a masterclass in what it actually takes to build a business that outlasts its first good idea. It's not just about talent with a bouquet. It's about delegation, resourcefulness, and the willingness to trust yourself when no one else can tell you the right answer.

The Journey of Delegating Without Losing Your Vision

Amber didn't start as a founder. She started as a florist—hands in the stems, eyes on the arrangement, fully immersed in the craft for over a decade before Leaning Lily ever existed. That hands-on foundation gave her an instinct for quality that still defines the brand today. But building a business meant confronting a truth many skilled creatives resist: you cannot do everything yourself.

"One of the biggest challenges of owning a small business is learning that you cannot do everything yourself," Amber explains. "There are always more things that need to be done, and it can be difficult to step back and trust other people with something you have worked so hard to build."

This is the quiet crisis every founder-maker eventually faces. The skill that built the business is rarely the skill that scales it. Amber's answer wasn't to abandon her craft, but to build a team she could trust with it, including her own family. Leaning Lily operates as a family-supported business, a structure that could easily strain relationships under the pressure of daily operations. Instead, Amber has used it to reinforce the business's foundation.

Her leadership philosophy makes this possible. "I would describe my leadership style as hands-on, supportive, and collaborative," she says. "Although our team is small, in a creative business, everyone brings something different to the table, and I think some of the best ideas come from working together." Delegation, in Amber's hands, isn't about letting go. It's about multiplying what one person alone could never accomplish.

Navigating Growth With Limited Resources

Leaning Lily's physical footprint tells its own story of strategic, patient growth. The shop first made its mark in Richmond's Historic Depot District on North Eighth Street, a cozy botanical space where Amber began building her reputation. Nearly ten years later, that modest start has given way to a larger, standalone location at 927 S 9th Street, a milestone Amber counts among her proudest achievements.

"Being able to purchase our permanent and forever location and making it our own was very rewarding," she says. "Building a business takes patience, consistency, hard work, long hours, and a willingness to keep learning."

That growth philosophy carries into Leaning Lily's newest venture: Petal Pusher - by Leaning Lily, a mobile flower extension designed to bring the shop's quality and personal touch directly into the community. Rather than overextending resources on rapid expansion, Amber chose a model that lets Leaning Lily show up at local businesses, events, and celebrations, without losing the intimacy that makes the brand work.

"Petal Pusher allows us to take the same flowers, quality, and personal experience our customers already know and love from Leaning Lily and bring them directly into the community," Amber explains. "It is an exciting new chapter for our family business, and we can't wait to see where it takes us."

This is a lesson worth underlining for any small business owner wrestling with limited capital: growth doesn't have to mean a bigger footprint. Sometimes it means a smarter one.

Balancing Creative Work With Leadership Responsibilities

Even as Leaning Lily has grown, Amber has stayed close to the work itself. Sourcing midwestern and seasonal blooms, offering custom-tailored containers, and maintaining a personal touch at scale are the details that separate a shop that merely sells flowers from one that curates meaning.

That meaning matters most in the moments that carry real weight. Leaning Lily has built its reputation in part on empathetic service for sensitive occasions, including hospital stays and memorials. For families facing some of life's hardest days, a thoughtfully chosen arrangement isn't decoration. It's comfort. Delivering that consistently, even as the business has scaled, speaks to how deliberately Amber has protected the heart of her brand.

That same empathy extends outward into Richmond itself. Leaning Lily has supported local organizations, schools, fundraisers, and countless community causes throughout its nearly ten years in business. "Being a small, locally owned business allows us to have a personal connection with the people and organizations in our community," Amber says. "I believe that when you own a small business in a community, you have an opportunity and a responsibility to give back to the people who support you."

The Power of Creating Opportunity, Not Waiting for It

Ask Amber what drives her, and she'll point you to a philosophy she's lived out for nearly a decade: "A successful woman doesn't wait for opportunity—she creates it, embraces it, and uses it to help others rise."

It's a fitting anthem for a business that began as a single florist's vision and has grown into a true community gathering place. Leaning Lily isn't just a shop that sells flowers for life's milestones. It's woven into the fabric of Richmond, showing up for the town's schools, its fundraisers, and its families, through both celebration and grief.

When asked what advice she'd give her younger self on day one of this journey, Amber doesn't hesitate: "Trust yourself. There will be times when you question your decisions or wonder if you are doing things the right way, but you know your business, your customers, and your vision better than anyone else. Don't be afraid to trust your instincts and believe in what you are capable of."

That instinct, built over a decade of hands-on experience and nearly ten years of entrepreneurial grit, is the quiet engine behind everything Leaning Lily has become. One woman's willingness to trust herself has rippled outward into a business that lifts up an entire community.
