RICHMOND, Ind. – Richmond Civic Theatre’s season is closing its season with a production of the classic musical Into the Woods.
This musical brings together familiar fairy tale characters in an interconnected story about choices and consequences.
Directed by Jaclyn Bartlemay, the show weaves together characters from Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack and the Beanstalk, exploring how their lives intersect deep in the woods.
“It’s all about how their paths cross and how they affect each other’s lives in the woods,” Bartlemay said.
Cast members said the production has offered both creative challenges and opportunities for growth. Ethan Bain, who plays Jack, described his role as a journey.
“I kind of portray this little boy character and as the story goes on you grow into this man, that’s transformational,” Bain said.
Other performers highlighted the balance of humor and character work in the show.
“Trying to put myself into the character while being the evil comedy relief has been really fun for me,” said Ashley Knock, in the role of Lucinda from Cinderella.
Bartlemay said audiences should pay close attention to the visual details, particularly the costumes, which reflect the evolution of each character.
“Look for a lot of really fun costumes,” she said. “There are lots of hints and nods towards the transformations of the characters in those”
Beyond the performance itself, cast and crew members said the rehearsal process helped build a strong sense of community.
Bartlemay noted as opening night approaches, their confident in the production.
