RICHMOND, Ind. – Richmond Civic Theatre will bring the story of America’s fight for independence to the stage this week with its production of the Tony Award-winning musical 1776.
The show opens Thursday, Aug. 6, and follows the debates and decisions of the Continental Congress as delegates work toward declaring independence. The production features Andrew Triana as John Adams, Mike Day as Benjamin Franklin and Dustin Sunman as Thomas Jefferson.
Director Becky Jewison said the timing of the show is especially meaningful as the country approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
“It is such a great show. And I’m just thrilled that this was the time to do it,” Jewison said.
The musical combines historical drama, humor and music while exploring the personalities behind one of the nation’s defining moments.
“It’s a drama but it’s a comedy, it’s music that, you know, there is a little dance, there’s not a lot, but they have to really nail all of that,” Jewison said.
The cast said the story remains relevant because it highlights the challenges and sacrifices behind the nation’s founding.
“The story of our independence is still relevant today,” Andrew Triana said. “This being the 250th anniversary and going back and thinking about what they went through… it’s just powerful.”
1776 runs Aug. 6-16 at Richmond Civic Theatre, with evening performances Thursday through Saturday and Sunday matinees. Tickets are available through Richmond Civic Theatre.
