DARKE COUNTY, Ohio – Figuring out what comes after high school can start with a closer look at what comes naturally: solving problems, communicating ideas or helping a team work together.
Those connections were part of Darke County’s inaugural Youth Leadership Conference, hosted by The Light Foundation and Darke County Economic Development at Chenoweth Trails.
According to an Oct. 23 update from the foundation, students nominated by school staff explored their strengths, considered career possibilities and practiced working with peers from other schools.
Olivia Schmitmeyer, Career Connections Coordinator with Darke County Economic Development, led a workshop using YouScience to help students explore their aptitudes and how those abilities could translate into careers.
Team-building challenges put communication and problem-solving skills into practice. Students also asked military veterans and community leaders questions during a panel discussion about leadership, service and responsibility.
The conference carried the theme “Leading with Honor: Lessons from the Frontlines.” Local businesses supported the program through sponsorships and volunteers.
