RICHMOND, Ind. – Residents are invited to Freedom Jam on Saturday, July 4, where officials will open Richmond’s 1976 Bicentennial time capsule.
The capsule, buried inside Freedom Fountain, contains 37 items intended to capture life in Richmond during 1976. Its opening coincides with the nation’s 250th birthday, offering a look back at messages and memorabilia.
Once the capsule is opened, items will be preserved at the Wayne County Historical Museum.
The effort to extract the capsule was made possible through coordination between the Code Enforcement, Parks Department and Street Department.
The time capsule opening is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Roosevelt Hill Band Shell in Glen Miller Park.
Following the unveiling, Freedom Jam will continue with live music, food vendors, family activities, and the annual fireworks display.
Residents are encouraged to attend the celebration and take part in what the city left 50 years ago.
