Cope Invites Visitors Into the Night for November Owl Searches

Categories: Community

CENTERVILLE, Ind. — A nighttime search for one of North America’s smallest owls will take visitors outdoors at Cope Environmental Center on Sunday, Nov. 1.

The Saw-whet Owl Search runs from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the center, 1730 Airport Road. Admission is $5.

The evening begins with a short presentation about northern saw-whet owls, their migration and the research helping scientists understand them. Participants will then head outside to search Cope’s property.

The program coincides with the birds’ fall migration. Cope describes November as the typical peak of their passage through central Indiana as they travel south from Canada’s boreal forests. A sighting isn’t guaranteed, but the search offers a chance to learn about these small nocturnal birds and explore their habitat after dark.

Registration is available through Cope Environmental Center’s website, which also lists additional search dates on Nov. 4 and Nov. 11.
