A major veterans shelter in Winchester is at risk of closing after the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs declined to renew two key funding programs that keep it running. The Journey Home says its primary contract ends September 17th and while the organization has applied for a new federal grant, a decision won’t come until late September. The shelter has served more than 500 homeless veterans since 2014, with 83% moving into permanent housing. The shelter is at 325 S Oak Street in a community building housing several organizations. Staff are now working with state and community partners to keep services alive.
